British Columbia's government filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in California over a mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge that killed six children and two adults, after the 18 year old shooter died by suicide. The province alleges OpenAI's safety staff had internally flagged the shooter's violent ChatGPT conversations months earlier but leadership never notified police. British Columbia is seeking damages and an injunction, and says OpenAI has refused to share the shooter's chat logs.

Legal AI startup Harvey, valued at $15.6 billion, saw its gross margins collapse from about 50 percent to negative 50 percent by June as token usage under OpenAI and Anthropic's enterprise pricing rose twentyfold. Meta's Muse personal AI agent has logged more than 2.5 million downloads since its September 8 launch, according to Sensor Tower, briefly overtaking ChatGPT as the top free iOS app in the US.
